Ants
Ants are generally difficult to control. You may have tried supermarket remedies and realized that they don't really work. You need to use the same chemicals as what the professional exterminators use. We at Cooper's have evaluated the different treatments and are pleased to offer the following effective solutions for:
The most common nuisance ant is the small ant, which comes in shades of black and brown. Many species make up this group, including house ants, pharaoh ants and pavement ants. These are the ants that often enter the home, foraging for food or in search of shelter.
Ants live in colonies that are made up of sterile female workers, short-lived males and an egg-laying female queen. Ants that enter the home are worker ants. They communicate with others by means of a pheromone, and deposit of this pheromone is what leads the ants to form trails.
Small ants have a wide variety of feeding habits. Some feed on sugar or starch substances, while others feed on grease or protein.
Small Ant Control
Save money and four effective baits for small ants in our Small Ant Kit.
When you use all four of these baits together, you greatly increase your chance of killing the colony. Exterior broadcast and perimeter treatments are also effective forms of small ant control.
Our recommendation for ant control inside and outside homes and buildings
For Inside
MAXFORCE FC Ant Killer Bait Gel is formulated to effectively control ants.
This ant bait contains Fipronil, a fast acting ingredient that is still slow
enough for foraging worker ants to carry the material safely back to the
colony. The bait is fed to the larvae and queens so that the ant colony
is killed by Fipronil's domino effect. Maxforce Ant Killer Bait Gel is
effective against Argentine Ants, Odorous House Ants, Pharaoh Ants, Cornfield
Ants and little black ants. The high moisture content of this gel enhances the bait's attractiveness
to target ants. The bait's attractiveness is greatest within two weeks of
application. This product is a bait product, formulated to take advantage
of ant trophallaxis. Through trophallaxis, worker ants eat the bait while
foraging, then feed it to the rest of the colony. The larvae digest the
solid bait and produce a liquid containing the Fipronil that is fed to the
rest of the colony and queens.

Fine--but deadly--dining awaits pesky ants that sample a new bait gel
formulation developed by Agricultural
Research Service scientists and a cooperating company.
Waterbury Companies, Inc. will sell the new bait gel as Drax NutraBait later
this month pending Environmental Protection Agency
registration on its use for odorous house-, pavement-, pharaoh-, little black-,
ghost-, Argentine-, carpenter- and crazy ants.
ARS and Waterbury recently applied for a joint patent on the bait gel
formulation since it is eaten by fire ants--a first for such products, according
to Guadalupe Rojas, an entomologist at ARS' Southern Regional Research Center (SRRC)
in New Orleans, LA. Rojas and ARS entomologist Juan Morales-Ramos began working
on the new formulation there about three years ago to lure the tiny, stinging
pests away from bait traps intended to kill Formosan subterranean termites. Both
pests are targets of large-scale ARS research and control projects in the
Southeast.
Under a cooperative agreement signed in 2002, Waterbury researchers Ligia
Hernandez and Jonathan Peters collaborated with the ARS entomologists to refine
and adapt the formulation to Waterbury's bait gel specifications. Waterbury
indicates it has supplied experimental use samples to university scientists for
independent testing in side-by-side comparisons with other products.
ARS' bait gel tests include ongoing, areawide trials at four fire
ant-infested sites: ARS-SRRC; the ARS
U.S. Small Fruits
Research Unit in Poplarville, Miss.; a residential neighborhood in
Poplarville; and the Mississippi State University
Experiment Station.
Observing and chemically analyzing what the pest likes to eat at different
times of the year was critical to the entomologists' development of the bait
formulation, which comprises a specific mixture of carbohydrates, lipids and
proteins. The final product is a weather-resistant, yellow gel that the ants
will eat year-round and that can be squeezed onto both flat and vertical
surfaces. It contains 5 percent boric acid, which, in tests, killed fire ant
colonies in two months or less, depending on their size and the season.

chief scientific research agency.

Baits
Now, treat with a combination of baits. Baits are the best solution for small ants as they will be taken back to the
colony to
eliminate the queen, have no odor and have low toxicity. We recommend that you use all four of the following together:
Mint Jelly Ant Bait,
Ant Control Stakes,
Liquid Ant Bait and
Protein Ant Bait.
All four are required to meet the dining
needs of the diverse assortment of ants one commonly finds.
Mint Jelly Ant Bait is an ant bait specifically targeted to sugar-feeding ants. Experts have said that mint jelly is the best bait for sugar ants. Apply a one-inch ribbon of jelly to a piece of masking tape to create a survey station. Place one survey station for every 50 feet of living space. The ants will begin to feed within about two hours. If there are more than 10 ants at a particular station, further baiting in that area is suggested.

Bowzer Bowl
With the Bowzer Bowl, keep ants out of your pets water bowl. Glows in the dark! Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are another type of ant you may encounter. 24 different species are known to live in the United States and Canada. Though their appearance and behavior may slightly differ, all are classified as carpenter ants because they nest in wood. Their nesting choice earns them a classification as a structural nuisance pest.
Established, older carpenter ant colonies consist of a main colony containing the queen, brood and workers and other satellite colonies containing workers and winged males and females gathering before their next mating flights. The quantity of satellite colonies is proportionate with latitude, with the greater number being found in the north. The main colony will often be located outside of structures in an area of higher humidity. Satellites can be inside or outside and they do not contain younger ants that need the higher moisture level. Therefore, satellites can also be found in more extreme areas, such as basements and attics.
Carpenter Ant Prevention
Homeowners should follow these simple steps to prevent carpenter ant problems:
- Locate firewood piles off the ground and away from the home.
- Trim trees and shrubs that brush next to the home. These can act as bridges to your home for the ants.
- Correct any wood-to-earth contact, such as buried posts or wood siding in contact with mulch.
- Fix any water leaks. Carpenter ants and other insects are attracted to moisture.
Carpenter Ant Control
If you have seen carpenter ants for over a year, with wings, or during winter months, it can be assumed that a main or satellite carpenter ant colony is present in your home. On the other hand, if you see carpenter ants only outside and during the spring, the colonies are likely only located outside. Obviously, the location of the colony will be an important determinant of needed control measures.
If you do suspect you have carpenter ants inside, the best treatment method starts with finding the nest. Often carpenter ants will nest in areas of water leaks, which can be caused by plumbing or inadequate weatherproofing. Some common areas to check would include moist, hollow spaces such as the void behind a dishwasher and poorly flashed chimneys. If there are no external signs of damage, you can sometimes probe the wood with a screwdriver to reveal excavated galleries. You can also tap along baseboards and other wood surfaces while listening for the hollow sound of damaged wood. If a nest is nearby, the ants will sometimes make a rustling sound, similar to that of crinkling of cellophane. If you can lure the ants out, it is sometimes productive to trace their trails back to the nest.
According to Barb Ogg, Ph.D., Extension Educator, a baiting technique can be used to locate carpenter ants' nests. Purchase some live crickets at your local pet store. Kill a couple and place them in an area where carpenter ants forage. Within a short time, the workers should have located the crickets and brought them back to the nest. By tracking their movements, it may be easier to find the nest location. Because carpenter ants forage during late afternoon and evening hours, make sure bait is available
at this time of the day.
Once you have found where the ants are, treat all wall voids and other hidden spaces containing their nests by drilling
small holes and spraying Perma-Dust into the hole.
Drill and treat at least 4 to 6 feet on either side of where the ants are entering in order to maximize the chances
of reaching the nest. Consider also treating behind electrical junction boxes.
If your carpenter ants are outside,
you should still follow them to their nests, which will often be in a stump or pile of wood. After you discover the
nest, spray it directly with Talstar One.
If you suspect outdoor nests, it's prudent to look at the foundation of your home at night, around doors and other
openings to attempt to locate ants.
You can also use Generic brand Bifen and save money. It has the same ingredient as Talstar One.
If you simply cannot find the nest, an effective alternative is to use Advance Granular Carpenter Ant Bait, the one of the best baits available. We have had great success with it, and no spray treatment can match the ease of use of a bait. Just put out the granular product where you have seen the ants, and they will take it back to the nest to share with the others.
Another bait that works well is Maxforce Gel Carpenter Ant Bait, containing the fast-acting ingredient Fipronil. Gel baits are convenient for placements in hard to get to areas, such as cracks and crevices, and in areas where less mess is desired.
We sell both Advance and Maxforce together in a money-saving Carpenter Ant Kit. Two high-quality baits give you the comfort of peace of mind in that you are taking care of the problem.

Fire Ants
Red imported fire ants have colonies consisting of brood, winged males with black bodies, reddish-brown winged females and workers. The worker ants are sterile, wingless females that protect the queen by defending against intruders, eating food first and moving her from danger. The winged reproductives live within the mound until their mating flights, which are most common during spring and fall. A queen fire ant can lay up to 800 eggs per day, building a colony having up to 500,000 workers. Queen ants can live seven years, but worker ants usually live only about five weeks.
Areas infested with fire ants having single-queen colonies have 40 to 150 mounds per acre, while multiple-queen colonies have more than 200 mounds and 40 million ants per acre. Fire ants prefer to build their mounds in open areas and in rotting wood. Colonies can quickly move from one site to another; the queen needs only six workers to start a new colony.
Fire ants are noted for their painful stings and the serious allergic reactions that some people have in reaction to them. They are known to attack en masse due to sudden movement, so if you accidentally step on a mound and they crawl up your leg, any quick movement could trigger all the ants to sting.
Fire Ant Control
Fire ants are notoriously difficult to control. For this reason, you need to treat their mounds directly and apply a broadcast treatment.
Treat mounds directly with Fire Ant Killer. Sprinkle a few tablespoons lightly and evenly over the entire mound. Avoid disturbing the colony during application. This can cause the ants to vacate a mound. This treatment will kill most of the colony within a day.
To keep the queen from migrating throughout your property and to keep away foragers, apply Talstar EZ Granular Insecticide. Talstar is a powerful insecticide that provides control that lasts up to six months. Broadcast the granules over your lawn at a rate of about four lbs. per 1000 sq. ft.
You can also use Generic brand Bifen and save money. It has the same ingredient as Talstar One.

Some folks think they have a problem with fire ants but leaf cutting ants ARE
a formidable foe and difficult, if not impossible, to control. The Texas leaf
cutting ant has several common names including the town ant, cut ant, parasol
ant, fungus ant and night ant as well as some which cannot be printed. This
insect can cause extensive damage in a very short time. It is a frustrating
insect because of its unrelenting attack on trees and shrubs, but it is also one
of the most interesting insects because of its complex life style. The leaf
cutting ant lives in large colonies that may exceed 2 million ants, and is one
of nature's original gardeners. Leaf cutting ants share the sophisticated habit
of growing a fungus garden with certain termites in Africa and Asia and certain
wood boring beetles. The leaf cutting ant removes leaves and buds from weeds,
grasses, plum and peach trees, blackberry bushes and many other fruit, nut and
ornamental plants as well as several cereal and forage crops. The ants do not
eat the leaf fragments, but take them into cavities where they use the material
to raise a fungus garden. These ants have highly refined habits and raise one
particular type of fungus. Certain workers attend the fungus garden at all times
and weed out or
destroy other types of fungi that start to grow on the material. As the fungus
grows, certain parts of it are eaten by the ants and fed to the larvae. This
fungus is their only known source of food. Orthene dust is the recommended
chemical control.

Management
WFA is an extremely difficult pest to control due to the large size of its
colonies, but control can be achieved. Baits are effective for many
sweet-feeding ant species. Laboratory tests at the University of Florida
Research and Education Center in Fort Lauderdale have shown baits to be the only
effective management method to date for WFA control. No surface or residual
treatments with liquid insecticides have yet been found to be effective for
controlling these ants. Management has only been accomplished by treating
infested homes exclusively with baits containing borates. It is critical that
all populations of WFA on the property being treated are identified so that
baits can be made available to each population. Since liquid baits tend to
slowly dry out, it is important that fresh baits are always available until the
target population has been controlled. Although bait toxicants may not be orally
transferred between workers, they can still kill enough workers to cause death
of brood by starvation. In addition, it is also thought that very slow acting
bait toxicants may, with time, end up in the trophic eggs. Residual and systemic
sprays to vegetation surrounding structures can also help by eliminating
honeydew producing insects.
WFA trails meandering up the sides of houses can often be seen entering soffit
vents that lead into attics. Because attics usually do not have food sources for
ants, infestations can frequently be treated by placing liquid baits along
trails on the exterior of the house. This will cause ants nesting in the attic
to emerge to feed on the baits. Treating the attic with an insecticidal dust or
spray might also be advisable in extreme infestations. Always follow label
directions when using an insecticide.
A key aspect of WFA control involves trimming trees and shrubs surrounding the
structure to stop ants from "bridging" (trailing from the vegetation onto the
structure). The best policy is to not have any vegetation touching exterior
walls. Large trees infested with WFA which overhang the structure should also be
trimmed back to stop "leaf nests" from falling onto roofs which can cause
reinfestation of the building. Placing liquid baits at the base of these trees
or along branches can also be helpful. Ant trails coming from neighboring
properties via adjoining vegetation, fences, or across lawns, must also be
treated.
Vegetation favored by WFA in south Florida includes: nearly all palms,
especially coconut, sable, or queen, most fruit trees, large ficus trees,
gardenia, hibiscus, ixora, many plants having showy flowers with sweet nectars
and most plants which are infested with aphids, scales, mealybugs or other
sap-sucking insects.
